Only 7/10? You must not win as much as I do. Let me know if/when you want to race.

I don't win because the blue shells are designed specifically to punish people who actually get good at racing.

I'd much rather race on tracks which were intelligently designed for racing without the designers resorting to constantly throwing stupid unavoidable obstacles at me to keep things interesting.  For this reason, the SNES Mario Kart has never been bettered.

The blue shells are designed to make it a game of wits. If you want to play a game where it's blind, no-thinking, and without-strategy racing, then play the SNES version. If you want a game that requires thought, play the other versions.

There are a thousand and one ways of avoiding the blue shells. I win because I’m good.

What's your score by the way?

My score is probably 5-thousand-and-something.  I'm way too old to keep a diary of my gaming under-achievements.

Entirely contradicting your reasoning, Mario Kart has always been a definitive twitch game and the point of the blue shells is to artificially balance the racing mechanic following the deviation from the template of the SNES version - short, snappy tracks where you are never far from the hussle and bustle even if you are either especially good or terribly bad at racing, and where the item usage is entirely finite given the question-mark panels do not re-spawn mere seconds after being hit - whilst still keeping the same format, with varying results.

MK64, for instance, is atrociously dull.  Many of the tracks are miles and miles and miles long, some with straights that are longer than many of the tracks in SMK and where it's possible to lose sight of your fellow racers for minutes at a time, regardless of your position.  Since the N64 era, the tracks haven't been tightened up much so it's clear the blue shells are more a knee-jerk reaction to the imbalance more sprawling map layouts bring rather than something which adds anything other than annoyance to the actual racing.

There's no "strategy" to the blue shells whatsoever.  If you're winning through skill and judgement and you're hit by a blue shells, commiserations, someone at the back of the race who has no chance of winning just made it harder for you to do so.  If you happen to get a blue shell yourself, the only thing you can do is fire it off immediately and hope for something more useful next time - you still have as many cars to pass before you reach first place, just one of them will have been arbitrarily nudged a few places back.
As far as I can tell there are about three ways of avoiding blue shells, all involving very precise combinations of items and circumstances, none of which are predictable given the item selection and occurrences of blue shells are entirely random.

All this means for me is that I'll probably not play the game as much as I've played previous games in the series, but Nintendo already has my money (and the money of everyone else who got it shot to #1 in the multiformat chart) so there is no doubt it'll do exactly the same next time round.

Blue shells are easily avoidable if one strategizes throughout the race. My ideal setup is have an item (such as a shell) latched on behind me for protection and a mushroom on standby. If a blue shell targets me, I just drop the shell and use the mushroom. Any good player can avoid them and are usually hit so few times by them that they don't complain.

The only thing I disagree with in your previous post is your "winning through skill and judgment and you're hit by a blue shells" statement. Racing skills exist, but hardly. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to hold down the A button. If you don’t like being hit by blue shells so much, either find a way around it, don’t be in first so much, or don’t complain. It’s a thinking game. One could stay in close second (with a shell item perhaps?) to stay safe from blue shells and at an opportunity to drive passed when needed. One could hang around tenth place very early in the race to get an item, such as Bullet Bill, and have it on standby once in first place through one’s “good racing skills.” The possibilities are endless, and that’s what makes this game and games like it so invigorating. Don’t tell me that Final Smashes in Brawl are cheap too and that it’s unfair if one player starts closer to it than another, or that the first player to attempt breaking it has a disadvantage over the other player having it weakened for him or her.

Games like Brawl and Mario Kart have a lot to do with luck/chance (dependant on whichever it is one believes in). There must be ways to even out the playing field if one person ended up getting lucky early on in the game and has a lead throughout rest of the race. Some might argue that those who are just plain good at the game are being punished, but that just isn’t the case. Blue shells are a part of the game, and if one can’t work with them (using them) or around them (having them used on you), then one probably isn’t as good at the game as one might have previously thought.

It's been my experience that excuses make for a sore loser. One might wish to check the working state of his or her controller while he or she is at it.

I dissagree. Blue shells are the bane of my existance in that game.
